Downtown Scottsdale's Fifth Avenue is becoming more of a high-fashion hub with the addition of a lingerie and designer-gown boutique and a new wholesale-fashion market similar to those in Los Angeles and New York.
Roxanne's Lingerie & Formals Couture recently relocated from the Promenade in north Scottsdale to the former location of Charles Parkhurst Rare Books and Autographs, 7079 E. Fifth Ave. SouthBridge developer Fred Unger owns the building, at Fifth Avenue and Marshall Way, and leased the space to owner Lola Harper.
"She had heard about a re-emergence of downtown Scottsdale, so she moved her business," Unger said.
Also on Fifth Avenue, Shannon McRae has just opened Scottsdale Fashion Market, 7050 E. Fifth Ave, a wholesale-fashion business for specialty stores across the Southwest. She also owns and manages two other businesses at the same location: Local Talent AZ Fashion Designers & plus size little black dresses plus size little black dresses Artisans, a retail store that features fashions and art by Valley designers and artists, and Sew Source, where she manufactures designers' fashions.
"I want this to be a fashion hub that buyers want to come to, and I want these local designers to really be able to launch their lines and get into the business of it if that's their goal," she said. "There's so much that this area has to offer. We have Phoenix Fashion Week and Scottsdale Fashion Week, Wedding Dress under 200 and we can be known for fashion."
Neither Harper nor McRae is worried about opening during the ongoing slow season, when soaring temperatures clear the area's sidewalks of pedestrian traffic.
"We've been doing it long enough that we know how to market for the seasons and the months that are slow," Harper said.
Alaska to Scottsdale
Harper began her business about 30 years ago with a small shop in Alaska. "I wanted to go where there was a bigger market for these types of gowns , so I thought about Scottsdale, and this is why I came out here," she said.
Whether it's a charity ball or a high-school prom vintage wedding dresses , Harper wants to make sure her clients are wearing gowns unlike any others.
"If a customer comes in and they tell us where they're going, we will not sell that dress to anybody else at that function, special occasion dresses for girls special occasion dresses for girls and we don't bring in a bulk of dresses of the same style numbers plus size summer dress ," she said. "You won't find two or three dresses that are the same."
Harper said women travel from all over to purchase her gowns, and she should pick up additional customers now that she's on Fifth Avenue. The new store is larger, allowing more room for inventory and customers, she said.
"There are a lot of tourists in this area that are walking by, so I feel that this is going to be good in picking up new customers."
One of Harper's regular clients is Denise Wise, whose husband, Robert Wise, is Discount Tire's vice president for the Arizona region. She is purchasing gowns to wear for the company's regional functions.
"Lola has unusual and unique gowns that are not cookie-cutter," Denise said. "She's got a great eye for what will look good on you."
Fashion forward
This week, McRae is sending an announcement and mailer about Scottsdale Fashion Market to about 1,600 specialty-store owners across the Southwest.
"Those buyers that own specialty stores are going now to Los Angeles or to trade shows, oftentimes in Las Vegas or whatever, to buy the merchandise," she said. "I'd like them to come to Arizona because we do have unique fashions here. I'm hoping that will build an awareness and generate some interest and revenue for us in this state."
McRae wants not only to work with local area designers, but also designers worldwide with unique designs.
In addition to working with specialty-store buyers, McRae plans to have sample sales twice a month, giving the public a chance to purchase designer pieces at a reduced rate.
McRae wanted to grow her business beyond retail sales, so adding wholesale seemed like the natural step.
"These local designers . . . who really want to have careers at it, I want them to be able to have it and stay here and enjoy the quality of life here, because if they go to New York or Los Angeles, they're going to get lost beach bridal dresses ," she said.
