When seen in her Miss Teen Southern Alberta tiara and sash, no one would guess that Alyssa Mahovlic was once a scared young girl in the children's hospital. Now she is on a mission to show young girls across Canada that scars are beautiful.
"I got surgery a year ago on both my legs which involved the doctor breaking and relocating every bone in both of my legs. They put a rod down the middle of my femur and then they put plates in my tibia and fibia and they twisted my whole leg around," explains the 15-year-old.
As Mahovlic says on her blog: "I was given a choice to live my life with the tragic pain of Severe Femoral Antivertion in my legs for the rest of my life wedding wedding dresses wedding wedding dresses evening dresses uk sale , or to get every bone in both of my legs re-located."
Today, she appears to be a normal teenager with a long list of achievements including making the honour roll and public speaking awards. The same year as her surgery, Mahovlic helped lead her cheerleading squad to a first-place provincials finish.
Now she is aiming for the Miss Teen Canada title, and wants to show young girls everywhere that scars should never hold anyone back.
"It really inspired me so it encouraged me to show other girls that your scars are beautiful because I was really ashamed of my scars after a while but then I realized that they're nothing to hide and they're beautiful so I want to show other girls that," she says.
Her mother, Sylvia, recounts those tough days when her health deteriorated. Living in Invermere, B.C. at the time, Mahovlic was rushed by ambulance to the nearest children's hospital and had a fever of 108 degrees by the time she arrived. Within two days of arrival she was moved to ICU.

It was during her time in a wheelchair she decided to shoot for the Miss Teen Canada title.
"I signed up for it without my mom even knowing. I just wanted to show other girls imperfection is beauty. I was really, really self-conscious I wouldn't wear shorts in the summertime it was so bad. And then I just realized looking around at all the other kids in the hospital that they have it way worse than me. They're covering up their scars too and I don't think it's right because I think that scars are beautiful. It should be something you show off, to show that you're strong," she adds.
Mahovlic is also looking for sponsors to help get her to the national level. She needs to raise $3, long evening dresses uk 000 by July 1.
"You need a dress , you need to be on top of your feet for every single question. I need to work on walking in heels because I just learned how to walk flat-foot. You also need to learn etiquette and posture and lots of speaking skills. And you have to have good fitness because there's a bathing suit portion too."
The Miss Teen Canada-World pageant will be held in Toronto in July with the winner to receive more than $30,000 in cash and prizes. Mahovlic will be representing all of southern Alberta, her personal charities being Alberta Children's Hospital and the YWCA Harbour House.
Winning, she says, would allow her the opportunity to share her story with even more people.
"I didn't expect to go in any pageants. It was beyond my wildest dreams. Hopefully going to Miss Teen Canada will open lots of doors for me and I'll figure out what I want to do and those doors will guide me somewhere."
